A three-drug chemotherapy used to shrink retinoblastoma, often to preserve the eye and vision. Expect lowered blood counts, hair loss, and some nausea; vincristine can cause constipation and nerve effects (use the recommended bowel routine). There's a small long-term leukemia risk from etoposide, so long-term follow-up matters.

Vincristine + etoposide + carboplatin — chemotherapy used to shrink retinoblastoma (an eye cancer of early childhood), often to save the eye/vision. Blood-count drops are nadir-based. Vincristine can cause nerve effects and constipation; etoposide carries a small long-term risk of a treatment-related leukemia. Generally given with anti-nausea support and close monitoring.

A drop in infection-fighting white cells (and platelets/red cells), lowest 1-2 weeks after treatment. Counts are checked before each cycle; any fever is treated urgently.

Call your team urgently: A temperature of 100.4°F (38.0°C) or higher — an emergency.

Not tied to a cycle day

These build with the number of doses, or are measured from when treatment started, so a cycle day would be the wrong shape for them. Each keeps the timing its own source states.

Nerve effects and constipation (vincristine)

Vincristine can cause numbness/tingling or weakness and commonly slows the bowel (constipation). Use the recommended bowel routine and report constipation with belly pain or new weakness.

Call your team: No bowel movement for 3 days with belly pain, or new weakness/trouble walking.

Hair loss

Hair loss is common and grows back after treatment ends.

Nausea

Sickness in the first 24 hours is the "acute" phase and usually peaks 2-3 hours in; anything from 24 to 120 hours is the "delayed" phase.

Usually mild-moderate and controlled with anti-nausea medicine.

Small long-term risk: secondary leukemia

years after treatment

Etoposide carries a small long-term risk of a treatment-related leukemia years later. It's uncommon and outweighed by the benefit of treating the cancer, but it's why long-term follow-up is important.
